History

Our story begins with a group of young adults in prayer at Fellowship Bible Church. The elders of the church were sensing God's leading to begin a ministry with young adults and were asking God to bring the right person to begin the work. In the summer of 2004 Reid Monaghan and his family responded to an invitation to come to Middle Tennessee to launch a movement with young adults which would live fully for the glory of Jesus Christ in our generation. He moved to the area in the summer of 2004 with his wife Kasey and two daughters in order to plant the roots for Inversion Fellowship - the young adult ministry of Fellowship Bible Church.

A small group of young marrieds and singles labored to launch Inversion in the late fall of 2004. Over the next year that group of people deepened and grew, giving their lives to the mission of Jesus in Nashville. The following year Jonathan Phipps, a native of middle Tennessee, moved back to serve with us as a catalyst for equipping within the growing ministry. His passion for people, community and spiritual formation brought a needed ingredient to what God was calling us to be. Our team was further enriched later that same year with the addition of Jennifer Leddy. Jen pretty much keeps everything running, facilitates our service efforts, brings strong leadership for our women and a discerning theological mind to the team.

In 2008 Inversion launched Jacob's Well, a church plant in central New Jersey by sending the Monaghan family and several young adults northward with the gospel.  God graciously provided new pastoral leadership to Inversion by sending Ray McKelvy to our team.  Ray planted a cross-cultural church in the Kansas City area where he pastored for 10 years before coming to Nashville in 2006 as a Community Pastor for Fellowship Bible Church. He followed Reid as Inversion's Teaching Pastor in the Spring of 08, and has a deep passion for mentoring, leading and preaching God's word.

Inversion - Why We Desire to Live Upside Down...

Our name comes from the revolution that Jesus brought into our world... Jesus speaks to our world in ways that both inspire and deeply challenge our perception of reality. Much of what he says causes us to rethink our paradigms of success and significance. He comes and tells us that the first shall be last and to be the greatest is to be a servant of all. In following Him, our world is effectually turned upside down and in the process we are made right side up. In his book The Divine Conspiracy, Christian philosopher Dallas Willard speaks of this great Inversion set in motion by Jesus:

To become a disciple of Jesus is to accept now that inversion of human distinctions that will sooner or later be forced upon everyone by the irresistible reality of his kingdom. How must we think of him to see the inversion from our present viewpoint? We must, simply, accept that he is the best and smartest man who ever lived in this world, that he is even now "the prince of the kings of the earth" (Rev 1:5). Then we heartily join his cosmic conspiracy to overcome evil with good.

Dallas Willard - The Divine Conspiracy

God has given us Kingdom dreams, a heart and passion for our city and a desire to live for Jesus as a counter cultural city within the city. We are united in a desire to serve others, share the gospel of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection for sinners like ourselves, deepen our in our thinking as his followers, and selflessly give our lives away.

Our story has just begun, many more chapters will be written. We invite you into his story to follow Jesus with us on his mission in our city.
