Don't Be Despised, Be an Example

Because of Timothy's age and experience the tendency would be for him to allow those older than he to look down on him and discount what he had to say and to offer.  Instead, Paul encouraged him to be an example of the believer's in speech, conduct, love, faith and in purity.

Don't Be Fearful, Be Passionate

It seems obvious that one of Timothy's natural tendencies was to be timid.  This ties in of course to even letting others look down on him because he was young.  Instead of the fear or cowardice Paul reminded Timothy of the resources he has in Christ, namely power, love and self-control. He was also reminded of the gifting that he has in Christ and in this he was to live passionately

Don't Be Ashamed, Be Strong

Paul wanted Timothy to know that there is a cost to living out the gospel.  Be ready to suffer, lose reputation and even die for the sake of the gospel.  Suffer with dignity and live with strength.

Don't Be Fooled, Be Discerning

There were many who were professing the name of Christ but not really possessing the life of Christ.  In this passage we will see that one of the great dangers to the church are those who attend the church.  As a soldier of Jesus Christ engaged in spiritual warfare Paul calls upon Timothy to be discerning about those he associated with.
