Jesus' Story Reveals Who He Is
As you read through the Gospel of Mark it is not just a journal of activities that chronicle the lives of Jesus and his followers. It is a narrative that tells His story. With every event and situation it reveals who this Jesus really is.
Parables are a Double-Edged Sword
One method of teaching for Jesus was the use of parables. "Parable" is a transliteration of the Greek parabolē, "comparison." It can designate a variety of figurative forms of speech (e.g.2:19-22; 3:23-25; 4:3-9, 26- 32; 7:15-17; 13:28). But usually a parable is a short discourse that conveys a spiritual truth by making a vivid comparison. The truth to be taught is compared to something in nature or a common-life experience.
Jesus' parables were uses not only to "illustrate" a point but also to reveal a heart. They were used as a double-edged sword to veil the eyes of those who rejected Christ and to enlighten the eyes of those believing in Christ.
His Story and Our Story Collide
Jesus never intended for His hearers to "hear" only. This portion of the book of Mark shows that when Jesus' story collides with that of His disciples He reveals Himself, reveals their need and reveals their heart. You will discover this pattern in your own life over and over; as you are exposed to His truth (story) it will call for a testing of the truth you have heard.
